EVA vs PVC vs PU: How to Choose the Right Dog Grooming Table Mat
Choosing a dog grooming table mat is not only about size or color. The surface material can make a noticeable difference in comfort, durability, grip, cleaning and how the mat performs during everyday grooming.
At SEGULMAT, we use three different surface constructions — EVA, PVC and PU — because different grooming situations require different priorities.
Here is how they compare and which type may be the right choice for you.
What All SEGULMAT Grooming Mats Have in Common
Although the top surfaces are different, our current grooming mats share the same basic idea: provide a more comfortable and stable working surface for dogs during grooming.
Each design combines a functional upper surface with a cushioned foam rubber base that helps the mat stay more stable on a grooming table.
They are designed for grooming situations where loose hair, water and everyday dirt are part of normal use, and the surfaces can be wiped or rinsed clean when needed.
The biggest difference is the material used on top.
EVA: Soft, Lightweight and Versatile
Our Multipurpose Dog Grooming Table Mat uses an EVA top surface combined with a cushioned foam rubber backing.
EVA gives the mat a soft and resilient feel under the paws while keeping the overall construction relatively lightweight and flexible.
This makes it a practical choice for home grooming, mobile grooming and general pet care.
The Multipurpose mat is available in two sizes:
16 × 24 inches
24 × 36 inches
It is also available in several colors, including Light Blue, Dark Blue, Light Grey, Anthracite and Purple.
When EVA Makes Sense
EVA is a good choice when comfort, low weight and versatility are important.
For smaller dogs or pets that benefit from a softer standing surface, the cushioning can make grooming sessions more comfortable.
The lightweight construction also makes the mat easy to move, roll and store.
However, EVA is a relatively soft material. Repeated contact with sharp claws or grooming tools can eventually leave marks or punctures in the surface.
For occasional or moderate grooming use, that softness can be an advantage. For intensive professional use every day, durability may become the more important priority.
PVC: Built for Regular Professional Grooming
Our Professional Dog Grooming Table Mat was developed for situations where durability becomes especially important.
Instead of EVA, the upper surface is made from textured PVC.
PVC is firmer than EVA, but it offers much better resistance to scratches, claw contact and the wear that comes from repeated grooming sessions.
The textured surface helps provide grip for the paws, while the cushioned foam rubber backing adds support underneath and helps reduce movement on the grooming table.
The Professional mat is available in:
24 × 36 inches
24 × 48 inches
Both sizes are designed for larger grooming tables and regular professional use.
When PVC Makes Sense
PVC is the better choice when the mat will be used frequently.
Professional grooming salons, veterinary clinics and groomers working with several dogs every day usually place greater demands on the surface than occasional home grooming.
The Professional mat sacrifices a little of the softness of EVA in exchange for a tougher working surface.
That makes it particularly useful when durability, repeated cleaning and resistance to everyday wear are more important than having the softest possible surface.
PU: Comfort with a More Refined Appearance
Our Premium Home Dog Grooming Mat takes a different approach.
Its upper surface is PU with a textured finish, combined with a cushioned foam rubber backing.
The result is a soft-touch surface with a warmer, more refined appearance that fits naturally into a home environment.
The Premium Home mat is available in:
24 × 36 inches
Its brown surface and coordinated storage tube were designed not only for grooming performance but also for convenient storage and presentation at home.
When PU Makes Sense
PU is especially suitable for home grooming.
If you groom your dog in a bathroom, utility room or another visible part of the home, appearance can matter almost as much as functionality.
The Premium Home mat provides cushioning and support while looking less like commercial grooming equipment.
It is well suited to brushing, trimming, coat care and regular grooming between professional appointments.
It can also be used in professional environments, but its main focus is comfortable home grooming.
EVA vs PVC vs PU — Which Should You Choose?
There is no single material that is ideal for every grooming situation.
Choose EVA if you want a lightweight, soft and versatile mat for home grooming, mobile grooming or general pet care.
Choose PVC if durability and resistance to frequent professional use are your main priorities.
Choose PU if you want comfortable support together with a more refined appearance for grooming at home.
The right choice depends less on which material is “best” and more on how the mat will actually be used.
Size Matters Too
Material is only part of the decision.
For smaller dogs or compact grooming areas, the 16 × 24 inch Multipurpose mat can provide enough working space without covering the entire table.
The 24 × 36 inch size is the most versatile option and is available across all three SEGULMAT constructions.
For larger grooming tables or dogs that need additional standing space, the 24 × 48 inch Professional mat provides a larger working area.
Before choosing a mat, measure the usable surface of your grooming table rather than relying only on the advertised table size.
Cleaning and Everyday Care
Regular cleaning helps maintain both the appearance and performance of a grooming mat.
Remove loose hair and debris after grooming. Wipe or rinse the surface with water and mild soap when necessary, using a soft cloth or sponge rather than abrasive tools.
Allow the mat to dry thoroughly before rolling or storing it.
Avoid cutting directly on the mat or allowing sharp grooming tools to contact the surface.
After storage, unroll the mat and allow it to lie flat before use.
Three Materials for Three Different Grooming Needs
The SEGULMAT range developed around a simple idea: different grooming situations need different materials.
EVA provides softness and versatility.
PVC adds durability for frequent professional grooming.
PU combines comfort with a more home-friendly appearance.
All three are designed around the same goal — creating a more stable, comfortable and practical surface for everyday dog grooming.
